Development Characteristics
In the very beginning of a new era, Financial & Economic Law Department of National University of Kaohsiung (N.U.K.) was established in August 2001. Our goals are to support and provide the need of manpower in the field of financial and economic law for the new Economic Development Project. It is expected that we take the lead in the reforms of Taiwan’s business community based on a brand new international and technical vision.
Basic Educational Concepts
n Realizing that the global business activity is changing speedily in the new economic era of the 21th century, we insist that the aim of education be not only passing on knowledge and skills, but also creating an environment to develop student’s potential for the enhancement of our national competitiveness. Thus, in addition to the basic training given in law and business-related courses, we put a lot of emphasis on the development of student’s capabilities in creating new ideas, group management, active learning, self-esteem, persistence, social responsibilities, and global perspective.
n Being a member of the WTO, Taiwan has more opportunities to play its active role in such a significant international body. Thus, a full understanding and active interaction with the international community is the prerequisite for enhancing Taiwan’s international influence. Due to the growing influence of the globalization in many respects, our main aim is to enhance students’ global perspective in the area of law as well as business activities. Hopefully, the advent of a new economic age in Taiwan’s industry, our students can become future leaders in this competitive environment.
n In the area of domestic development, F.E.L of N.U.K. will comply the government’s policies to give training in relevant expertise and foster the prosperity of the Southern Taiwan. Moreover, in the high-tech and biotechnology related fields, we will also provide professional support for the consultation of up-to-date law and regulation.
n Mainland China is inevitably becoming one of the important business markets in this process of new economic globalization. Therefore, legal issues with respect to the application of business law between Taiwan and China will also be the goal we support.
n Because the internet and globalization have brought new impacts to traditional fields of law, the development of financial and economic law is now mixed with various elements such as natural science, social science, management and so on. For all these reasons, we will try to combine those different elements with essential characteristics of financial and economic law.
n Our curriculum will surely put premium on the basic knowledge of traditional law. In addition, we provide some upper level courses allowing senior students or graduate school students to study tax law, intellectual property law, international economic law, and technology law in depth.
n The content of the curriculum will be designed to deal with the new challenges after Taiwan’s accession to the WTO. In addition to Taiwan’s domestic law, our curriculum will also focus on the comparative study of Chinese law and international law.
Goals
Based on some fundamental educational concepts, we attempt to establish a good foundation for students through the learning of basic knowledge and giving instructions on how to actively seek an effective integration of information resources discovered in our society. We also help students to develop positive attitude in the face of rapidly changing world, such of active learning, self-confidence, and forward thinking. Through teaching, we make students understand law, show concern about the society, respect each other and realize the dynamic vitality of laws. We hope to make a balance between humanity and society.
Postgraduate Opportunities
n Advanced degree study
n Career opportunities
Students graduating from F.E.L. Department of N.U.K. will not only be able to take national-scale examination for lawyers, attorneys, judges and etc, but also can pursue further study abroad or in Taiwan. Due to Taiwan’s entry of WTO, we encourage our students to go beyond Taiwan’s traditional employment market and to seek for new working opportunities that involve foreign legal systems, law firms, legal consultants of cross-national enterprises and so on. Furthermore, having received training in the interdisciplinary fields at school, graduates from our department are qualified to assume positions related to risk management in various industries in the future.
Future Outlook
n To create human resources, new learning environment and new attitude toward new economic development.
n To integrate different fields of financial and economic laws.
n To seek cooperation between government, academia and industry in the fields of financial and economic laws.
