Campus Network

The campus network links up with the Southern Regional Net Centre and HiNet at speeds of 200 Megabits/sec and 768K/384K ADSL respectively. Part of the outward net flows and library database net flows are directed to HiNet, which is the diversion flow mechanism of the campus network. The campus infrastructure network, centred on the main service room of the library building, links up with all building on campus. The interface of Gigabit Ethernet serves as the connection interface of all building networks to form a high-speed broadband campus network at a speed of 1 Gigabits/sec. All buildings, including study carrels, offices, laboratories and classrooms are equipped with web points of 200 Megabits/sec to facilitate search on the internet.

Internet Facilities

Each building on campus has its own wireless network. In addition, overlapped areas among buildings and public areas of woods, ponds, gyms and recreation centers are planned to be equipped with access points for real-time on-line retrieval and learning.

Completed areas ¡V

Library & Information Building: offices, the middle square, Long-Distance Teaching Laboratory and Multi-Media Laboratory on the ground floor; offices, the middle square, Reference Area and International Conference Hall on the first floor; Periodical Area on the second floor; Book Collection Area on the third floor.

Gymnasium: the swimming pool, Barbecue Area and part of the playground.

Law Building : the middle squares and corridors on the ground and first floors.

Personal ID authentication is required for the wireless network use, including database enquiry, e-mail service and the school administrative information system. The wireless network can connect the Internet via the campus infrastructure network. NUK is the first academic institution in southern Taiwan to obtain the Wireless Network Wandering Authentication, which grants the University staff and students wireless internet service in model wandering areas of the country.

Long Distance Instruction

In recent years, the Internet has become not only the most popular media but also the advantageous tool of information competitions. The application of the Internet is now a key index to measure the information competitiveness of all nations. In education, on-line instruction gradually becomes a trend and a form of teaching equipment. Students are provided with multiple learning opportunities to contact the learning environment of the information world since the Internet can assist on-site teaching in traditional classrooms and offer space for virtual classrooms. The Internet is expected to effectively increase the efficiency of traditional instruction and enlarge the scope of education. With long-distance instruction, there are diversified channels for training and more quality teaching to facilitate academic exchange and resource sharing. Lecturers put materials on websites so that students can read materials, participate in discussion, and communicate or interact with lecturers via the Internet.

The University purchased one set of long-distance synchronising instruction equipment in 2000. Although there is no instructor and technician for conducting long-distance teaching in the University, on the basis of shared educational resources, the University still receives broadcasted courses from other schools per semester, so as to improve broadcasting skills and offer different courses to the University students. Besides, long-distance instruction may encourage the University students to participate in discussion and interact with academic staff and students from other schools, and broaden their views.

E-Learning System

The University has completed the Language E-Learning System. Here is the introduction:

The digital learning platform, observing the requirements of teachers and students with different contents, takes charge of course information and teaching management, namely classrooms and offices. The platform helps the teaching staff manage classes, educational affairs, course materials, assessments, teaching progress and grades. Besides, the platform inspires students to learn spontaneously in such an independent environment since it helps students manage courses and learning progress; interact and discuss assignments with their teachers. Through the convenient digital learning platform, both teachers and students may expand potential. In addition, the platform also provides an environment for the maintenance staff of the on-line learning system to establish and manage databases for academic staff, students, and courses.

Accommodation Network

The University employs Access Control Lists (ACLs) provided by Cisco IOS as the management tool. In order to effectively curb fraudulent use of IP addresses, the IP addresses of the Accommodation network have to be exactly matched with users' MAC addresses for campus network use. Besides, to prevent users who often excessively use the network and virus-contaminated computers, IP addresses which are against flows and duplicated will be denied or permitted on a daily basis.
